ER trip numero dos!

this monitor shows some of his numbers... the green 1o2 on top is the heart rate. 1o2 is high. that was low for his numbers last night. the little finger clamp at one point said that his heart rate was up to as high as 234. which the nurse said was a false reading, because they have to shock people to reset their hearts at 18o... but to be safe, they hooked him up to the electrodes that you'll see below. you only see 2 - there were 6 on his chest & belly.
i might've had a little too much fun ripping those suckers off when we left the hospital after 2:oo in the morning. freak, at 2 o'clock - don't expect me to be nice & sensitive.
this is Garrett in the ER again last night. His cheeks are rosy - cause he has a high fever.

after garrett's appendectomy 1o days ago, he has almost constantly struggled with a fever. up until monday, i had been prepared to get him back to the hospital as a result of a fever. then we both went back to work this week & he had his follow up appointment on wednesday & i guess i let my guard down - i thought we were in the clear. but no. i hadn't been very good about taking his temperature, so i honestly don't know this week what his fever was doing. but he wasn't complaining so i didn't think too much of it.

yesterday at lunch - i guess garrett chocked on some carrots for about 10 minutes. he texted me and told me that his stomach was feeling pretty sore again after that. he came home from work last night, we ran a few errands - he'd mentioned that he wasn't feeling the best & that his stomach hurt. so we get home & i thought that we'd just kinda go to bed early & let him rest & that his stomach was just sore from coughing so much earlier in the day. but then he complained about being really cold... so i felt his head, he was burning up. great. a fever. a high fever. we called the surgeon & then suggested that we head back to the ER. awesome.

we go to the ER at about 8ish. they ask questions, draw blood, get a urine sample... this time around though, he was not feeling great, but not nearly in as much pain. no narcotics. just fever reducers. but a good 6 plus hours and another CT scan [with some vomiting on his part] later - they diagnose him with an infection and an inflammation around the appendix site. inflammation they can fight with antibiotics... abscesses they can not. the inflammation could turn into an abscess - but hopefully will not. abscesses need to be drained. which would mean another cut of some sort. big or small, i don't know yet & honestly don't want to worry about. yet.

apparently garrett found out on wednesday [but forgot to mention to his worrisome wife] that his appendix hadn't burst or ruptured... but it had leaked against the wall of whatever organ it was up against... so this infection that he's been fighting has only been growing & getting worse. for the last 10 days. which is why he was fighting a fever all of this time. goodness.

they recommended that we come back tonight to the ER to get another IV dose of one of the antibiotics. IV is more effective than pill form. so we'll go - we're going to take this seriously & fight it off as best we can.

Garrett is feeling pretty good. he's got a low grade - dullish ache in his belly. his fever seems to be down today, but we're giving him tylenol or motrin every 3 hours. it does go up a little towards the end of the dose. we're both tired. he slept off and on in the hospital last night. i didn't. i got 3 hours of interrupted sleep last night. we had errands to run this morning [another post on one of those errands might be coming in the next few days] and are now home again but not really able to sleep... hopefully that'll come in time.

i'll keep people updated the best i can. so help me though - if we end up having to do another surgery, i might go bananas. i just want him better already. thanks to everyone for their concern. mom, i'm sorry that i had to steal your thunder on your mother's day post...

Oh, Hales! That totally sucks. You called all of that on Monday, you know. Guess you need to listen to what your guts are telling you a little more. But, then again, so does Garrett. :)
